About Michael
Michael Terry is a freelance musician living in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, GA. Michael holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Kennesaw State University where he studied euphonium with Mr. Bernard Flythe. At KSU, Michael performed with the KSU Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. David Kehler, the KSU Tuba/Euphonium ensemble under the direction of Mr. Bernard Flythe, and the KSU Trombone Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Tom Gibson. At KSU, Michael was announced a winner of the 2012-2013 Concerto Competition (watch the performance here!) and the Composition Contest (for his composition for Wind Ensemble titled Haiku - watch the World Premier performance here!). Michael completed his student teaching practicum at Kell High School (Marietta, GA) under the supervision of band director David Roth.
In 2015, Michael began working with the newly formed Kennesaw State University Marching Owls as a music/visual technician and as the staff arranger.
Previous to his time at KSU, Michael was the principal euphonium of the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Robert Rumbelow and played with the CSU Trombone Choir and Octet under the direction of Dr. Brad Palmer. Michael studied euphonium with Professor Andrew Miller during his time at CSU. Michael had the privilege of composing and arranging for the CSU Trombone Choir and Octet throughout his time spent at CSU.
Outside of college life, Michael performed as a member of The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, based in Allentown, PA from 2000-2007. During his tenure at The Cadets, Michael was a featured soloist and the corps was crowned DCI World Champions in 2000 and 2005. Michael was twice named "Cadet of the Year" (2005, 2007). From 2010-2013, Michael served as a member of the brass faculty for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps, based in Casper, WY. In 2014, Michael served as the Brass Co-Caption Head for the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, based in Atlanta, GA. Michael returned home to The Cadets as a member of the brass staff in 2015, teaching the mellophones. Michael was awarded "Rookie Staff Member of the Year", and the Cadets hornline won the Jim Ott award for excellence in brass performance at the DCI World Championships. Michael continued with the Cadets in 2016, and was recently announced as Brass Caption Head for the 2017 season.
As an arranger/composer, Michael has written for high school marching bands across the country and in China, as well as college chamber ensembles. Recent commissions include "Reflections of Grandeur", commissioned by Dr. Tom Gibson for the KSU Trombone Ensemble, and "Fantasies on a Peeters' Aria", commissioned by Dr. Doug Lindsey for the KSU Trumpet Ensemble. His style is influenced by John Adams, Philip Glass, Philip Sparke, and great arrangers of the drum and bugle corps idiom (Jay Bocook, Michael Klesch, Jim Prime), among others. This juxtaposition of styles creates a driving force in Michael's music that keeps listeners engaged as each piece evolves.
Michael's professional affiliations include Mu Phi Epsilon, co-ed professional music fraternity (Delta Epsilon chapter), and Phi Mu Alpha, professional music fraternity (Nu Theta chapter).
